Winston-Salem Forsyth County School Board

Board of Education
.....The Board of Education has nine members, elected in 1998 to four-year terms.
.....The county is divided into two districts, with four members elected from one district, two from the other, and three at large.
.....Members receive compensation equal to one half the amount paid to the county commissioners.
.....The board acts only when meeting in official session with a quorum of five members. A majority of the members present and voting is required for a motion to pass. No one acts in the name of the board unless ized by the board to do so.

The superintendent is appointed
.....The superintendent is appointed by the board and administers the school system in accordance with board policy and state law. He manages the budget, supervises staff and students, and makes recommendations about the operation of the school system.

The board usually meets three times each month
.....The board holds a briefing session on the first Tuesday of each month and action sessions on the second and fourth Tuesdays. Meetings begin at 6 p.m. in the auditorium on the third floor of the Administrative Center, 1605 Miller Street. Action sessions are televised on Cable 2 and are open to the public except when the board is in executive session.

You are invited to participate
.....You are invited to participate in board meetings. You can get an agenda or "board book" at the media table in the back of the auditorium. If you would like to speak before the board, you must register at the media table. If you wish to address an agenda item, you will be called when that item is discussed by the board. Otherwise, you will be called during the "Meeting Open to the Public" item on the agenda.
.....Please limit your remarks to three minutes. The secretary will time each speaker. If you need more time, you may request an additional two minutes from the chairman.
.....If you would like to suggest an item for the agenda, please submit information in writing to the superintendent's office at least three working days before the meeting.
.....Although the board encourages your involvement and will listen to your concerns about individual school problems, it recommends first working with teachers and principals, who can resolve most problems. If you believe that a law, policy or rule has been violated, you should use the grievance procedure established by the board. Matters which cannot be resolved at the school level should be taken to the appropriate division director, then to the superintendent before approaching the board.
